Tirunelveli
Nov. 26: The public works department and the Tirunelveli municipal corporation are in a dilemma about whose responsibility it is to cut the water supply to the houses of the VIPs including that of the district collector as they have been drawn from the pipeline meant for the medical college hospital and students hostel here.
To enhance uninterrupted water supply to the medical college hospital, a separate pipeline from the Palayam-kottai main water tank was laid. Despite this, the municipal corporation, a few years ago, allowed water supply from this pipeline to the residences of the district collector, police superintendent, CSI bishop, office of the PWD executive engineer and some others. Due to this, water supply to the hospital was reduced forcing the hospital management to buy water paying extra amount.
The district collector Jayaraman, who studied the problem following the representation from the pati-ents’ welfare association, issued orders to cut the extra connections including the connection to his bungalow drawn from this water pipeline.
However, neither the municipal corporation nor the PWD is ready to execute the order. While the PWD shifted the responsibility of severing the connections from the main pipeline to the corporation administration, the corporation said as the PWD is maintaining the pipeline, it was their responsibility to execute collector’s order.
To crown it all the Palayamkottai zonal chairman of the corporation suggested one more separate pipeline to the hospital, medical college and the students’ hostel to enhance supply of water instead of closing the existing connections.
