Nov. 28: Tamil Eelam engal uyir, India engal mayir, screamed the 70-odd supporters of film director Seeman, who returned from Canada in the early hours of Saturday after being deported from Canada for making ‘inflammatory’ speeches in support of the LTTE. The pro-Tiger leader of the Naam Thamizhar outfit had gone abroad to participate in the rallies in connection with the LTTE’s Maaveerar Dhinam (Martyrs’ Day), which fell on November 27.
The Canadian police detained Mr Seeman on Thursday and put him on the Jet flight back to Chennai. The much-publicised deportation drew the supporters of the movie director-Eelam activist to the airport with garlands and shawls to give him a hero’s welcome. Some of them carried placards with the slain Tiger chief Velupillai Prabhakaran’s pictures.
The supporters raised slogans hailing annan Prabhakaran as maaveerar and called Seeman as Puratchi Veerar. A posse of policemen stood nearby watching, notwithstanding the assurance given earlier by the state director general of police K.P. Jain that stern action would be taken against anyone publicly praising the LTTE or its leadership. In this airport reception, Seeman’s men went a step further and called Mother India their mayir.
