Nov. 28: Over 5,000 candidates have been selected for various corporate jobs through the job fairs across the state in the last one year, said Mr T.M. Anbarasan, state labour minister, who distributed employment offer letters at a job fair organised at Chrompet here on Saturday.
“Employment and Training department is organising job fairs across the state and also conducting at least one job fair every month in all the districts. Thousands of candidates from the age group of 18-25 have been selected for various corporate companies,” the minister said.
About 22 corporate companies including Ford, Hyundai, Nokia, HCL and Reliance have recruited about 5,170 candidates from Chennai in 2009. “More than 2,600 candidates were recruited from Kancheepuram district in the past 10 months,” said A.S. Jeevarathinam, commissioner of Employment and Training.
“More than 10,000 candidates were registered for the job fair on Saturday and about 1,290 candidates were selected for various jobs through spot interviews,” he added.
Besides multi-national firms and BPOs, several other regional companies have also taken part in the job fair.
“SCM Garment, a company from Tirupur, has offered 2,000 jobs for candidates who have studied up to eighth class,” said a department official.
Mr Mahendran, an English literature graduate from Presidency College, who is awaiting his interview results for a job in a call centre, said that such job fairs are very helpful for candidates who are in search for a job during the recession period.
“I need a job as early as possible and at least a call centre job will be more than enough for my survival,” said Mr Mahendran, a physically handicapped candidate.
