Thanjavur
Nov. 26: Burglaries and robberies have become the order of the day in Thanjavur district with at least 320 sovereigns of gold and 3.5 kg of silver ornaments stolen in the past 25 days. But, not even a single culprit has been arrested in connection with the thefts so far, sources said.
The culprits did not even spare a woman sub-inspector of police. The victim, Kalavathi (50) attached to the police control room in Kumbakonam, was walking in civil dress to a shop located in her area on Nov. 17 when two motorcycle borne culprits snatched her chain weighing seven sovereigns. These crimes have taken place despite the claim by the top police officers that they have cracked down on several criminals in the district during a special drive.
SP Dr Senthilvelan, however, attributed the growing incidents of crimes to emergence of a new breed of criminals and lack of adequate police personnel.
“Thanjavur city has gro-wn over the years. There are 40 colleges and five universities in the district, which attract students from other cities and other states. The students are staying in extension areas thus making the task of monitoring all the areas tough for the police,” Dr Senthilvelan said. He said that special teams had now been formed to nab the culprits. He also cautioned the people to be wary of strangers.
