Dec. 24: Hundreds of traders from Pudupet thronged the Egmore police station on Thursday after a traffic policeman, who claimed to be mentally unstable, attacked a shopkeeper.
Perumal, the constable, who was on duty in Pudupet, allegedly attacked Sulthan Ali, as soon as the later got down from a bus on Thursday morning.
Following the incident public caught the policeman and handed him over to the police.
According to the police, the incident of traffic cop beating up the local trader, which took place around 10 am, created tension in the area as the traders started surrounding the policeman.
“It is not clear why policeman Perumal attacked Sulthan Ali, who was bleeding from his nose. Seeing this, other traders surrounded the policeman and rescued Sulthan Ali. Policeman was later handed over to the Egmore police. Nearly 500 traders brought Perumal to the station,” the police said.
Enquires revealed that Perumal was a mentally disturbed person.
“He was suspended once and had joined duty only two weeks ago. We will have to initiate action against the constable,” the police said.
