Dec. 15: In a daring daylight robbery, a three-member gang gained entry into a 70-year-old woman’s house, gagged and tied her up before looting the house of its valuables in Ayanavaram on Tuesday.
Subramaniam, a retired income tax officer and his wife Sulokshana are residents of Medavakkam Tank Road in Secretariat Colony. Around 7am on Tuesday, while Subramaniam was away for a morning walk, a three-member gang banged at the door and called his name loudly. Thinking it was someone known to her husband, an unsuspecting Sulokshana opened the door. “The gang barged in and while two of them held the elderly woman, another man tied her hands and legs and stuffed a cloth into her mouth to prevent her from screaming,” police said. They immediately went from one room to another and began to empty the contents of the cupboards. The burglars got away with Rs 6,000 in cash and 15 sovereigns of jewellery that were worn by the old woman. When Subramaniam returned home, he was shocked to find his wife gagged and tied. He immediately alerted the Secretariat Colony police who rushed to the spot and lifted fingerprints. “The gang must have watched the activities of the couple over a period of time. Knowing that they were alone and can be robbed easily, they executed their plan when Subramaniam was not at home,” said the investigating officer.
