Dec. 8: In a bizarre incident, a 16-year-old girl student who witnessed her best friend’s death on road committed suicide by setting herself ablaze.
The deceased Nivenitha, a resident of Kaladipettai in Tiruvottiyur was a plus one student.
She set herself ablaze on Sunday evening at her grandmother’s house in Thiruvanmiyur and succumbed to burns in a private hospital on Monday.
Nivenitha had a good friend in Gayathri, a resident of the same area and the duo studied in the same school.
A few days ago when Gayathri and the deceased were walking home together after meeting a friend, a speeding vehicle hit Gayathri.
“Nivenitha watched her friend suffer and die on the spot. The incident took its toll on her and the girl went into a depression,” police said.
According to the girl’s family, she was in a dejected mood for the past few days after her friend’s death and she never spoke much to anyone.
On Sunday she left to her grandmother Subbulakhshmi’s house in Thiruvanmiyur under the pretext of studying. “Nivenitha went upstairs and doused herself in kerosene and set herself on fire,” police said. She was rushed to the Kilpauk medical college hospital for treatment where she succumbed to the burns on Monday night.
