Chennai, Dec. 4: NRI doctors visiting Chennai as performers of classical music during December music season is often reported. A local doctor, Dr S. Sundar, well-known physiotherapist from Tiruvanmiyur is also a noted musician. Dr Sundar did his MBBS from Stanely medical college and later did his PG in physical medicine. He learnt music under Sangita Kalanidhi D.K. Jayaraman. Later, he got a bachelor’s degree in Indian music from University of Madras. He is now very much into music.

He also founded Dhwani, a magazine on Carnatic music. He has performed along with his guru Jayaraman several times in the city’s major sabhas. He finds time to attend to patients at his physiotherapy clinic and to help physically challenged children. His versatility was recognized with a Tamil Nadu government’s Kalaimamani award a few years ago. In one of his interviews, Dr S. Sundar said, “My task is to look at a patient with disability in a holistic manner.”

“A person who has lost his little finger is considered as one with a mild disability. But what if he is a veena player or a violinist,” he asked. This thought motivated him to help the disabled with Freedom Trust, an NGO that provides the disabled with artificial limbs.
