Dec. 21: The rising gold prices can sure be a pain in the behind. Four people, including two Indians traveling from Colombo to Chennai, who were hiding nearly a kilo of gold each in their rectum, totally worth a whopping Rs 54,24,800 were arrested by airport officials on Monday.
Sri Lankan nationals Sayed Ahmed (43) and Mohammed Palasi arrived in the city by an evening flight. Airport officials suspected something was amiss when they spotted the duo walking awkwardly. When a baggage check did not throw up anything suspicious, the men were taken to a room, and strip-searched. A medical team was called in, and they found over a kilo of small gold biscuits, ingeniously wrapped in condoms, and then in balloons, stuffed up the men’s anal passages. Ahmed was carrying 1.20 kg of gold, and Mohemmed was found hiding 1.19 kg of the yellow metal in his innards.
Even as the team took over 2 hours to retrieve all the hidden gold, officials arrested two others who landed in the next flight from Colombo. Peer Ahmed (30) and Masuk Ali (32), natives of Ramanathapuram district also walked to the baggage claim area in an uncomfortable manner, and were immediately intercepted.
A similar investigation of the men revealed that they were smuggling gold in the same way, and retrieved 515 gms and 262 gms from them. The total amount of smuggled gold weighed 3.17 kg, according to customs commissioner Mr Periyaswamy, who is investigating the case.
