It’s been half a century and just a handful of films, yet when Dharmendra, of the Sholay fame appears on screen, all others seem to take a backseat. He was the reason Yamla Pagla Deewana rocked the box office. Yet, despite all the silver screen’s glory the star remains a child at heart. And he can even play an inconsequential role on screen with the kind sincerity that only down to earth people of his ilk are capable of. Meet Padma Bhushan recipient and one of the most dashing dudes of Bollywood, Dharmendra, as he sits down and lets his mind stroll down memory lane with us.
On finally winning an award:
I have always believed that I am here to keep my fans and everyone around me happy. I feel that if a few humble words from me can bring happiness to anyone then I have succeeded in life. To tell you the truth, I have come so far only because of the love I get. My very existence is thanks to the people who love me. I feel that entertaining them is my sincere duty and that any kind of appreciation that comes my way is a reward for a job well done. I am honoured to be conferred with the Padma Bhushan. The award is in addition to the love that I have been getting from my fans for so many years. But I thank my mom and God for making me what I am today.
On hearing the news of the award:
In so many years I have only played the characters given to me, to the best of my ability. This award should be dedicated to all my fans and people. I will never forget that I have been conferred this award because of the people who love me and I thank them from the bottom of my heart.
On the family’s reaction:
They were astounded at first, but as the news sunk in, everyone was on the top of the world. When I say my family, I also mean my countrymen and brethren.
On rising expectations:
I feel that with this award my responsibility of entertaining my audience has increased. I will have to get serious about my job now. However, at this age I don’t really know how to do that. I promise to sincerely do my best.
On choosing roles:
Now I will have to choose good characters in order to please my audience. With the help of the Almighty and people around, I hope I will be successful at getting meaningful roles. I now plan to use it in a way that brings happiness, to me and to those who matter.
On the years in the industry:
It is difficult to put my feelings into words. Even today, I feel the same as I did when I first entered the industry. I feel enthusiastic and fit as a fiddle. I feel that no one needs to sit and brood over what went wrong. Remember, you live just once, so why not live it with success.
On star sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol:
They have given me my time now. They share all the responsibilities and allow me to do everything I may have missed out on while I was working. Hema has also given me all her love and support. Esha and Aahna’s love makes me a complete father.
