Rathnakumar, who had penned earthy scripts for several of Bharathiraja’s films, including Kizhakku Cheemayile, Karuthamma, Kadal Pookkal, is turning independent with Sengathu Bhoomiyile. With Maestro Ilayaraja’s scintillating music ably supporting the script, the director has explored the realms of anguish and despair to present a captivating fare.

Vallarasu (Pawan) and Chinnasamy (Senthil) of Madurai are close friends with good rapport. Jayakodi (Sunulakshmi) and Vairasilai (Priyanka) are in love with Vallarasu and Chinnasamy respectively. Soon, a series of events unfolds and a family feud leads to enmity between Vallarasu and Chinnasamy! At loggerheads, they bay for each other’s blood. In the process, romance takes a backseat. The pain of losing relationships and one’s beloved is highlighted well by Rathnakumar and the film ends in a riveting climax.

A major plus in the film is the apt casting by the director. Pawan and Senthil play their part extremely well. They get under the skin of their characters and emerge winners. Priyanka and Sunulakshmi are equally good.

Their performance towards the climax is heartrending. Singam Puli’s one-liners evoke little laughter.
Ilayaraja’s background score is the backbone of the film. It gives the right emotions at the right places. The movie imparts a bigger message that violence should be shunned.

The director is able to convey it effectively with interesting twists and turns despite a lesser-known cast. A well-made film, worth a watch!
