Businessman review: Exaggerated feel to Mahesh Babu fare

Businessman is a typical Mahesh Babu film all the way, evoking laughs with comic one-liners and subtle expressions. However, his efforts could go in vain thanks to a contrived and highly exaggerated plot.

As the story goes, a youngster arrives in Mumbai to become a mafia don. Director Puri Jagannath really went into overdrive by making our don and his goons fix an election and spending `35,000 crore in the bargain.

Even Mahesh’s die hard fans will scoff at the idea. After the massive hit Pokiri a few years ago, the actor-director could have made a better choice as far as the script is concerned. The story of an orphan who takes to crime to avenge the death of his parents seems to be retold too many times, and in this case, it was a little too exaggerated.

Though the love affair between Mahesh and Kajal takes off interestingly, later in the movie it seems to just go from one scene to another aimlessly. There are a lot of inconsistencies in Kajal’s character as she hates his gangster ways, yet holds on to him without much conviction. He surrenders to the police to prove his love for her, yet his men abduct her to get him released.

Our don is very preachy and promises to cleanse the evil system from within, but ends up supporting the cause of wrong ones (like saving Sayaji Shinde from gallows by eliminating an approver in jail).
Music composer Thaman, who scored a musical hit in Dhookudu, couldn’t sustain the momentum with this flick and just belts out two numbers for the heck of it.

The film begins with Nasser, the top cop of Mumbai, declaring that the city is free of “bhais” and urges people to lead a peaceful life. Then arrives Mahesh Babu with every intention of becoming a don and helps a mayor-candidate win the election for money and hires out-of-work goons and establishes a network. He then joins hands with a political party.

Meanwhile, he falls in love with Kajal, daughter of Nasser, but she keeps her distance after coming to know that he is a gangster.

After Dhookudu, Mahesh Babu’s role is understated, but he should have avoided saying the word 'uttachapoistha' too often and showing the last finger repeatedly. Kajal is wasted, while Nasser is just ok.

This movie was incredibly pathetic.
As a Puri and Mahesh admirer, I was just fretting to leave the room. Concept is taken from RGV "Company", Hero-Heroine on/off relationship is taken from Pokkiri, and the concept of a common man rising to the summums through crime is the story of 1979 Amitji's "Don".
The most irritating thing, was Mahesh's frown. He wears it constantly, to the point he conveys no other "real" emotions. He is too sarcastic and unethical to be a real person. If they wanted a badass hero, they should have gone full-on in the sript/screenplay, à la Ajith in "Mankatha".
Story is nonsense and unconvincing, characters are pointless in their aims and all meet and wave bye to the screen within 15mins. Romance is well...the most artificial put up ever. Kajal turns from a painter to an irrelevant sissy girl, with bakwaas dialogues.
Songs and choreography are a pain to watch and offer nothing new in the cinema landscape.
Clearly, the only intention was: "business man" should bring "business" for the producer. Such a waste of effort and energies.
Puri Jagannadh has clearly stopped loving cinema, and is now more interested in bagging money! It was an insult to RGV to even quote his name in this useless piece of direction...

The movie was expected that it will create sensation. But for Mahesh Babu's acting and Music, the movie is substandard. There are many technical drawbacks: (1) Too much close up shorts with Mahesh Babu; (2) It was so boring because, the shorts were indoor, no outdoor at Mumbai except one/ two locations viz.Beach and slum areas. (3) No comedy (4) Second half was too boring. (5) Sub standard direction in the last song. Chal... saale...though song was so good. (6) Costumes for gang leader is not matching with the scenes. (7) Instead of Puri, the producer could have opted Gunasekhar or Sreeenu Vitla or Mehaseh Butt. (8) The screenplay was very bad in the Second half that shows the directors credit worthiness. It is not like either Pokiri or Dookudu. (9) The movie was hit because of Mahesh Babu fame and for Taman music. (10) Director should realize his mistakes in making movie in short period with hurry burry for making collections.
