Contempt notice to top cop for talking on mobile in court

An Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) on Thursday faced the wrath of the Bombay High Court which issued a show cause notice against him for talking on his mobile phone inside the courtroom.

A division bench of Justices A. M. Khanwilkar and R. G. Ketkar issued show cause notice for contempt of court against ACP A. V. Patil from Bhiwandi for talking on his mobile phone, while the court was presiding.

In the afternoon session, Justice Khanwilkar while hearing a matter, noticed Patil, who was seated in the second row of the courtroom, talking on his mobile phone.

The judge directed an additional public prosecutor present in court to ask the ACP, who was dressed in civil clothes to stop talking on the phone.

However, when the officer continued talking, Justice Khanwilkar asked him to stand up and enquired as to who he is.

When informed that he was an ACP and had come for a hearing of his matter, Justice Khanwilkar said: "If educated people like you behave like this in a court room then what can we say to a common man."

The court then took suo-moto (on its own) cognizance of the incident and issued a show cause notice for contempt of court against Patil.

The ACP has been directed to file his reply by January 27.
