A curious passerby inspects a vehicle which was damaged after 15-year-old Akshay fired shots from a double-barreled gun belonging to a security guard posted at an ATM, in Bengaluru on Friday - Satish B.

The rider of a two-wheeler was injured and three others in an SUV had a miraculous escape when a bullet from a double-barrel gun of a bank security guard was accidentally fired at them in Jayanagar, Bengaluru on Friday.

The incident occurred around 3.30 pm on East End Main Road in front of the Shamrao Vithal Co-operative Bank Limited. The security guard of the bank, Muddappa, gave his loaded gun to the teenage son of the building's owner, who accidentally fired the weapon.

Akshay, a SSLC student from a private school, was reportedly checking out the loaded gun and had pointed it towards a supermarket close by when he accidentally pressed the trigger. Since the safety latch was not on, the gun fired.

The bullet first brushed past Mohamed Abdul Rauf, 36, who was riding past on his two-wheeler and then shattered the side window of the parked SUV. The impact of the bullet was such that six pellets pierced the neck and back of Rauf and smashed the side windscreen of the SUV.

“All I heard was a loud bang and saw Rauf bleeding. We stopped the vehicle. The bullet came from nowhere," said a shocked Mohammed Bakash, who was riding pillion with Rauf as they were returning home to Mangammana Pallya after lunch. Rauf runs a small shop in BTM Layout and sells bamboo sticks for construction work.

Rauf was rushed to Shekar Hospital, where he was given first-aid before he was shifted to Sagar Hospital. Doctors attending him said that a scan revealed six pellets, but his condition is stable.

“We have kept Rauf under observation after a scan in the evening. The results showed that pellets are stuck in his neck and back. One has pierced just below the ears. On Saturday we will be able to comment on his health,” said a doctor, adding that the pallets will be removed. Both Muddappa and Akshay were taken into custody by the Tilak Nagar police.

The police have named three people in the FIR-- Muddappa, Akshay and Vishal Security Agency, which is the security provider for the bank. The police are yet to file the charge-sheet. A senior police officer said that an inquiry will be conducted on Saturday after which a case will be filed.

“A case of negligence under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act could be taken up against the security guard," he said.
