Iran isn’t “unhappy” with the India vote in the UN Security Council on Syria but at the same time would like New Delhi to pay more attention to present day realities and support other democracies in the world.
Iranian ambassador to India Seyed Mahdi Nabizadeh on Tuesday also discounted the possibility of an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities though he said that his country was prepared to “defend” itself in case of that eventuality.
“We think the possibility of attack is weak. Today is not the day when people go to war. But we are ready to defend ourselves. We have experience in defending ourselves. We hope that eventuality will not take place,” said Mr Nabizadeh.
Regarding charges that his country is working to make nuclear bombs and that it’s nuclear programme is not for peaceful purposes, the Iranian ambassador maintained that his country has always worked within the IAEA framework and supports nuclear non-proliferation. He also noted that Iran allowed IAEA inspectors into the country several times for inspections.
Bringing up Iraq, he noted that no nuclear weapons were found there even though the US invaded that country. “What did they find in Iraq. They invaded Afghanistan. Who created Taliban? Who gave power to Taliban? These questions have to be answered. In the name of war, innocent people are killed,” he said. He added, “Who will punish the US for its crimes. Who will condemn them?”
