Cash-for-votes: PM slams oppn, Advani during LS address

Latest update on this story: NDA have walked out in Lok Sabha after Prime Minister's reply on cash-for-vote scam.

--------------

Earlier,

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday took potshots at octogenerian L.K. Advani, saying the former deputy prime minister has not forgiven him for becoming the prime minister which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader thought was his birthright.

"Advaniji believes that prime ministership is his birthright. He has not forgiven me," said Singh in his reply to the discussion on WikiLeaks revelation of US diplomatic cables on the cash-for-votes scandal of 2008.

Manmohan Singh asked Advani to wait for three more years to fulfil his dreams.

Advani had led his party in asking for the prime minister's resignation after the leaked US diplomatic cables suggested that MPs may have been bribed for supporting the Manmohan Singh government.

Also reflecting on the troubled situation in the Middle East, from where India sources the bulk of its oil needs, the Prime Minister said 'we have instead chosen to be exercised about what some embassy official writes about us'.

he added that this was 'dangerous'.

"Parliament should reflect what we are doing to ourselves," he said. Referring to the opposition furore over the WikiLeaks reports purportedly based on secret American diplomatic cables, the prime minister added that it was easy for any embassy official to create strife in India just by planting some message and ensure it was leaked to political parties.

The prime minister did not name any particular embassy in his address.

More PM's quotes

We were not involved in any illegal act nor we had authorised anybody to indulge in any bribe given during 2008 Confidence Vote, says PM in Lok Sabha.

"I leave it to the good sense of the House to decide for itself if the report of Parliament's inquiry committee substantiates wild allegations."

It will be dangerous to go for what an embassy official has to say about us, says PM on Wikileaks revelations.

"It is not possible for the government to ascertain the veracity of correspondence between US Embassy and its government in Washington."

"People of India have voted us to power, please wait for another three and a half years."

"It is my considered judgement that the parliamentary enquiry committee report does not establish conclusive evidence on the bribery issue."

Dr Singh by throwing mud on L.K. Advaniji, saying that he feels Prime Ministership is hisbirth right, has shown footpath-pavement levl politician decorum in our temple of democracy (i.e.) Parliament. He was a respected man before joining politics who has sullied everything including India's image.

Mr Kapil Sibal claimed Parliament is the temple of democracy. No one disputes it. But the question is, are a few poojaris corrupt or not? Does not the JMM bribery case lead one to conclude that the money rain in Parliament during trust vote on 123 shown on Lok Sabha TV, during the no-confidence motion. brought about by one of trusted party of the ruling party till then? If, the then Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, desired a detailed enquiry, then why did the government not order one? One consolation on watching Kapil Sibal’s advocacy in Parliament is, the judges have escaped the blah-blah for the time being and they handle such yet provide justice is remarkable.
Hasan Ali asked for the authenticated documentary evidence for the stashed money case ED and other authorities slapped on him and Supreme Court has preferred an SIT to enquire into the stashed money. While Dr Singh and Kapil Sibal ask for the authentication of iki leaks, the claim appears similar to Hasan Ali’s but they also quote Wikileaks to pull the pants of opposition. BJP, as one understands, was never against nuclear power option or engaging trade with the US, but they were clear that that any business will be as per our terms is what the common public understands.
At least now, are not the constitutional authorities sense the need to bring in a code of conduct to discipline the representative of people?
Banning MPLAD, with the funds, state-funded election only will enable poor and honest to contest election. The MPLAD and other perks become returns on election investment, both money & muscle power. Even if the tax havens advertise attracting investment with past records of satisfied customer base, there will be some asking for proof, they are the butchers of Indian democracy occupying the temple of democracy. Poor illiterate Indians may vote for a chocolate if given free. Should our constitutional authorities be silent spectators with corrupt pujaris in temples?
