A serene call from atop the hills

A serene call from atop the hills

The gigantic rocks seemed like a herd of elephants descending. The climbing was not hard, as the distance to the hill-top from the base was less and rocks are not slippery. Ayyappanmudi (Mount Ayyappa) is humble, welcoming visitors of all age groups.

The mount is situated in Ernakulam district, eight km from Kothamangalam enroute to Thattekkad. For devotees, it’s a place to worship their Lord Ayyappa.

For youngsters, it’s a place to get together and go for a trek. Beyond these, the hill top provides a beautiful view of fog covered Western Ghats, forests, Periyar river, remote villages and many other places beyond the reach of our eyes.

A temple is situated at the hill top of Ayyappanmudi. Legend says that a rice ball for Lord Ayyappa transformed into a rock.

It’s fascinating to see it in absolute balance at the hill top. Kaduva allu (tiger cave) is another attraction. A huge round rock lies above the cave. Walking through narrow passages there is adventurous.

The breeze, the sight and calm atmosphere makes you feel as though we are meditating. I waited for the famous Ayyappanmudi sun set. The sight of sun painting the western horizon red and hiding somewhere beyond the hills was breathtaking.
