Kitty proof your home

Cats love to explore. These curious fur balls have a very sensitive nose, which makes them more likely to investigate, getting into things that can be hazardous. Here are a few tips to help make your home safe for your cat:

Keep your windows screened at all times. Never assume that your kitty will be able to keep her balance on the windowsill. Hardware-mesh screen is preferable, as cats have been known to claw through the smaller, more fragile screening materials. Store poisons away from the cat’s reach. Make sure that poisons, such as detergents and medicine, are securely locked away. Keep sharp utensils away from the cat’s reach. A sharp knife can cut a curious tongue or paw, if left on the table or counter. Keep the toilet lid closed when not in use. This will prevent a kitten from jumping in and drowning. An older cat may be tempted to drink from the toilet water

Remove or cover electrical cords. Kittens love to chew them when they’re teething, so unplug, remove or cover electrical cords as bitten cords can result in severe burns or even death. Don’t let young kittens out on balconies, upper porches or high decks. Letting young kittens out on the balcony of the apartment is not a safe way to give them fresh air and sunshine, it can result in a fatal injury.
