Men and porn. It’s arguably the most popular extracurricular activity for males all over the world, fuelling the multi-billion dollar adult entertainment industry.
Yet it remains firmly behind closed doors. In the light of the recent ‘porngate’ incident where three Karnataka ministers were caught watching porn during Assembly proceedings, we ask guys where they stand on the issue.
According to model-turned-actor Shahwar Ali, porn is something that should stay within the four walls of the bedroom.
Shahwar says, “I’m not against watching pornography per se. Sure, people can watch it in their homes in their free time.” But in this case, he expresses his disgust at the ministers, saying, “These are our elected representatives ignoring their duties and watching porn in the Vidhana Soudha. It is men like them who give us all a bad name.”
Software engineer and social media enthusiast Tinu Cherian seconds his opinion, adding, “A lot of people watch porn. Though I’m not endorsing it, I’m not against it either. What strikes me is the hypocrisy of it all. The minister for women and children’s welfare becomes a moral police and advocates a dress code for women to avoid sexual assault. Not one month later, he’s caught red-handed watching porn while the Assembly is in session!”
“Pornography can be addictive, but most men grow out of it after their teens, or at least they should,” feels author Chandraprakash Mohata. “It’s fun when you’re young and single, but it’s got nothing on a real relationship. When you don’t need to watch porn anymore, I think it’s the sign of a mature man.”
Stand-up comic Praveen Kumar has a lighter take on the issue, saying, “Don’t watch porn. But if you must, don’t get caught! These ministers should learn from teenagers the art of watching porn without getting caught. Who knows how many others in the Assembly were sharing the same video clip, but unfortunately for these guys, they were caught.”
Praveen goes on to add, “Everybody watches porn. Even women. But watching pornography is like losing your virginity. Men brag about it and women hide it under the carpet.”
