It is nearing appraisal time again and most employees are going through appraisal meetings with their managers and the HR department. It is very necessary for employees to have an open mindset for a positive appraisal session. Here are a few points on how to make an appraisal feedback session constructive.
* Be positive. The mantra is to “view your meeting in a positive way”. During the meeting, observe and listen to what your manager is trying to tell you. Do not take any criticism personally — see it as a way to improve your work performance.
* Ask questions and offer feedback. If you don’t understand something, be sure to clarify it so that you both have the same understanding. Recognise the constructive aspects of the conversation and use them to do a better job.
* Avoid getting defensive. Getting defensive just makes you seem aggressive, which only makes things difficult.
* Be a good listener. Instead of jumping to conclusions about what you think someone is saying, listen to what he or she is actually saying.
