Madhur Daga, ED, Orient Ceramics and Industries Ltd.
It was December 1990 and I had just finished my first semester at the University of Southern California.
Foreign students were only allowed remuneration from part-time jobs so instead of returning home for the winter break, I thought I’d spend a couple of weeks earning hourly wages. One of the open positions was something that in-volved being in-charge of the on-campus recreation room.
The rather large room was the destination of choice for students who wanted to relax or opt for activities like listening to music from a juke box, playing video games, air hockey, pool, etc. The job was assigned to me and another student.
Our duties included the cleaning and maintenance of the hall and equipment, renting out items and submitting end-of-the-day accounts.
It was a wonderful two weeks. The most valuable lesson I learnt was that the key to success is to love what you do. The second lesson was to own responsibility for whatever job you have been assigned, and exceed expectations both for yourself and for your reporting authority.
