Exfoliation in reference to beauty essential means, removal of dead skin cells from the outermost layer of the skin. It is recommended for all skin types, as it removes sluggish dead skin cells revealing the fresher, younger skin cells below. Exfoliation must be done to ensure healthy skin as it unclogs the pores; helps in getting a better shave by opening the hair follicles and cleanses the skin.
It is a myth that a sensitive skin type should not use exfoliators. No doubt one has to be careful in choosing a product as per their skin type. Another myth attached to exfoliation is that it causes breakouts. On the contrary it helps clear unclogged skin and cleans the pores reducing the breakout of acne but one should use mild exfoliators for this purpose. It also helps serums; oils' active ingredients penetrate into the skin ensuring better results.
There are many kinds of exfoliators and methods but one must be cautious in selecting the correct way to exfoliate as well as choose the right product that suits a person's needs and skin type.
In ancient days people used abrasive pebbles, coins and pumice stones to exfoliate and scrub dead skin away. This practice is a complete no-no unless used correctly. It’s not only harsh on the skin but is susceptible to external infections. Abrasives like pumice stones, foot files should be used gently with soaping agents on foot soles and not on body.
Exfoliation should be done in a way that it does not over dry or irritate the skin, and a moisturiser application after exfoliation is a must.
Every skin type requires a different kind of exfoliation:
For normal skin or a no fuss skin: Any exfoliating agents work like walnut grits; apricot grits; corn grits, sugars and salts, which are harder exfoliators.
For sensitive skin: They should experiment only with soft exfoliators like micro beads infused with active essential oils; kiwi seeds, fruit pulps etc.
Special care should be taken when exfoliating the face. It has to be done gently taking care of the sensitive portion near the eye. Exfoliation is a perfect remedy that will not only leave your skin looking fresher, younger but also smooth, silky and wrinkle free.
