With youngsters becoming more conscious about health and physical fitness, they are increasingly falling prey to a host of health problems mainly because of the unscientific exercise regimen.

Sports medicine experts in the city point out that many youngsters who hit the gym or do exercise at home, without qualified trainers, run the risk of developing a host of physical problems including muscle strain, pain in neck, shoulder and back and even disc bulge.

Dr Harish Chandran, consultant orthopeadic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, Cosmopolitan Hospital said, “on an average I see four to five cases daily. Most of themare in the age group of 20 to 35 years.’’

Recently, a 27-year-old youth came to him with a problem of radiating pain from the back to the legs.

He developed back pain following the exercise regimen at a fitness club where he had enrolled to get into shape. “ Most of these trainers tell the youngsters to continue training even if there is pain or muscle cramps.

He also continued with the exercise routine and when he reached me he had a problem of disc bulge. A disc bulge if left untreated can leave the patient bedridden and can cause disc prolapsed,’’ Dr Chandran said.

In such cases the doctors advise complete rest and administer anti-inflammatory drugs. “Once the pain subsides we concentrate on core muscle strengthening exercise,’’ Dr Harish said.
