LDF to demand early by-election at Piravom

The LDF state committee on Monday decided to urge the state government to hold early by-polls in the Piravom Assembly constituency.

Addressing media persons after the LDF state committee meeting here, Front convenor Mr Vaikom Viswam said that the government was deliberately trying to delay the by-polls fearing a rout.

“The government should initiate immediate measures to ensure early polls. There are no adverse circumstances on the ground that warranted postponement or delay of the by-poll,”he added.

The LDF leadership was of the view that the government was worried about its poor performance and that’s why it wanted to delay the by-poll.

According to LDF, the state government's major shortcomings include failure to put up a united stand on the Mullaperiyar dam issue, mishandling of the Kochi Metro Rail project, farmer suicides in Wayanad, violation of jail norms by R. Balakrishna Pillai and failure in the Health sector and the Munnar front.

On the Mullaperiyar issue, Mr Viswam said that the stand of the central and state leadership of the Congress was aimed at helping Tamil Nadu.

While pointing out that Chief Minister Mr Oommen Chandy's statement regarding joint control over the dam was opposed by senior Congress leaders, the LDF convenor said that the Front would launch an agitation to protest against the government's weak stand on the dam issue.

The LDF also attacked the government on the Kochi Metro Rail issue saying that the move to keep out DMRC and invite a global tender for the project was to pave the way for corruption.

The LDF, however, did not discuss CPI state secretary Mr C.K. Chandrappan's statement against Mr Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.
