Doctors to intensify stir

Another fresh trouble is brewing in King George Hospital (KGH) and other government hospitals in the district as government doctors have decided to intensify their agitation to bring pressure on the government.

Another fresh trouble is brewing in King George Hospital (KGH) and other government hospitals in the district as government doctors have decided to intensify their agitation to bring pressure on the government.

There are around 350 to 400 government doctors and teachers in Andhra Medical College and peripheral hospitals. They have been observing token protests since 10 days, gathering near the KGH and staging dharnas for an hour daily.

Government doctors are going to meet in Hyderabad on Tuesday to decide on their future course of action.

It is learnt that they are also contemplating to boycott duty if the government does not listen to them.

“There are many disparities in salary scales given to us. Moreover, there are no time bound promotions in government medical colleges in the state. An assistant professor for 10 years remains an assistant professor when he should be promoted as associate professor after 4 to 5 years of service, which is why most of them are leaving government service and joining private hospitals,” Dr Uday Kumar, president of the local chapter of the AP Government Doctors Association (APGDA), told this correspondent.

He added that they would decide their plan of action in Hyderabad on Tuesday. Government doctors have been waiting all these days for junior doctors to call off their strike to launch their protests.

Meanwhile, four fasting junior doctors who were taken to the ICU on Saturday night were shifted to a special ward on Monday as their condition stabilised.

After being convinced by their colleagues, the fasting doctors have called off their hunger strike. Now, junior doctors have decided to take their agitation to the people.

On Monday, hundreds of junior doctors took out a rally from KGH to Jagadamba centre and formed a human chain. They also distributed pamphlets to the public, explaining their cause. Other groups like the AITUC are also joining our stir from Tuesday, said Dr Prashanth.
