Air pollution is more near the police control room in the city where more number of vehicles ply through the centre, including 2,000 buses, according to a study conducted by AP Pollution Control Board authorities under national air-monitoring programme of the central government.

The AP Pollution Control Board officials are collecting the data of air pollution at three different centres in the city including at police control room, Benz circle and Autonagar.

As per the data collected by the auth-orities last year, the carbon emissions at police control room stands at 7.1 per cent and nitrogen oxide at 15.1 per cent during December last year. The highest nitrogen oxide emissions of 21.4 per cent was recorded in January last year.

The board joint chief environment engineer, Mr A. Vijaykumar, said that the pollution levels of carbon emissions would be more during winter due to lack of air flow.

He said that the data collected here would be sent to national air-monitoring authority, Delhi.

He said that over 100 stone crushing units were present in the district. They were asked to set up pollution control units. He said the department has been insisting them for bank guarantee and in case of violation of pollution norms, the amount would be seized. Majority of the units are switching over to anti-pollution measures, he added.

Coming to par-boiling rice mills, he said that the department has been issuing notices to the rice mills to prevent pollution of water sources through waste water released from the mills.

If the rice mills fail to adopt anti-pollution measures the department would force the closure of the mills, he warned.

At autonagar, the highest carbon emissions stands at 8.7 per cent during Febr-uary last year and nitrogen oxide at 15.6 per cent during January last year. In another busy area Benz circle, the highest carbon emissions stood at 7.9 per cent in March last year and nitrogen oxide emissions stood at 14.5 per cent during January last year.
