Police has formed six special teams to nab former DMK minister K.N. Nehru who is said to be absconding following the registration of a case against him and five others under five sections by police for assaulting and abusing a warder in the central prison campus here on Monday.
Police succeeded in arresting only the party’s Tiruvarur district secretary Poondi Kalaivanan in Tiruvarur on Monday evening and the others are absconding.
A police team has rushed to Chennai in anticipation of Nehru attending the wedding reception of his son at the Mayor Ramanathan marriage hall in R.A. Puram on Wednesday. DMK president M. Karunanidhi had conducted the marriage of Nehru’s son in Tiruchy on Sunday.
With rumours doing rounds that Nehru could be hiding there, police rushed to Cuddalore, Pondicherry and Chennai. “We will nab him soon,” claimed a senior police officer.
Sources said that warder L. Veeramani, on duty at the jail’s main gate, stopped Nehru’s car and other vehicles carrying party leaders in the morning. The warder asked the former minister to wait till he gets instructions from his superiors to let them in.
This apparently irked Nehru, who allegedly abused the prison official. The party leaders also allegedly abused the prison official, threatened and pushed him down, causing injury to his hand.
Nehru drove towards the prison when the warder opened the gate on seeing the car of the superintendent of the special prison for women, Tiruchy, coming out from the prison campus, sources said.
