Paper on liquor mafia sought

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mr M. Venkaiah Naidu demanded on Sunday that the Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, publish a white paper on the recent Rs.5,000 crore liquor syndicate which has shaken the state politically and economically.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Naidu said that it was unfortunate that the Congress government chose to use the ACB report on the liquor syndicate in the state to blackmail its political opponents, though it was answerable to the entire people of the state.

He took objection to the Congress government underplaying the ACB report, based on the community factor.

“Even after the name of minister Mopidevi Venkataramana figured in the liquor syndicate kickbacks, no action was contemplated on him,” he deplored.

Referring to the inordinate delay on the part of the Assembly Speaker in disqualifying MLAs who defied the party whip in the recent no-trust motion against the Kiran Kumar Reddy government, the BJP leader said that this gave scope for suspicion.

“Under Schedule 10 of the Constitution, he should immediately disqualify MLAs who violate party whips,” he said, adding that he (Speaker) should immediately clarify his stand on the issue, and ta-ke steps for their disqualification before the start of the Assembly session.

Mr Naidu demanded the intervention of President Mrs Pratibha Singh Devi Patil in the removal of Union Law Minister Mr Salman Khursheed for his utter disregard for Elect-ion Commission norms in connection with the Uttar Pradesh elections.

“His remarks amounts to blatant violation of the Constitutional provisions and will set a dangerous precedence in a democracy,” he said. Referring to the Polavaram issue, the BJP leader said that it had become contentious since three decades and saw its politicising under various governments.

He demanded that tenders of Polavaram project should be called for once again and immediately.

Regarding the contradiction in his remarks favouring Samaikhya Andhra recently, the BJP leader said, “Even under the two-state policy, the Telugu people stand united.”
