
The election to select district leaders for the Kerala Students Union in Malabar region turned violent when groups owing allegiance to ‘A’ and ‘I’ factions clashed in the streets, alleging impersonation.
The clashes started when some activists alleged that many of those who came to the venue posing as students had faked their identity and were not eligible for voting.
The issue went out of hand when a batch from Kannur raising slogans in praise of Congress leader K. Sudhakaran MP arrived.
The police team led by Kasaba circle inspector Pramod swung into action to control the situation. Youth Congress leader Rigil Makkutti alleged that the issue was deliberately created by a rival Youth Congress leader belonging to I faction.
Former KSU state general secretary M. Dhaneesh Lal submitted a complaint to Congress general
secretary Rahul Gandhi alleging that many non-students had illegally held voting rights by making fake identity cards of 13 colleges in the district.
At day’s end, group equilibrium was maintained with A and I groups claiming three districts each. V.P. Dulfithil was elected as Kozhikode district president, while Jisham Pulamanthol the president of Malappuram district.
In Palakkad, A.K. Shainab was elected the president. The three belonged to the A group.
In Kannur, Sudip Joyan was elected the president, while Pradeep Kumar got in for Kasargode district. In Wayanad, P. Jashil was named the president. The three belonged to the I Group.
