A mother against vaccination

Reba and daughter Eva
Reba and daughter Eva

It was a year before her daughter was born that health journalist Reba came across anti-vaccination literature.

“I was intrigued and started reading what was written about vaccines with my husband. I also talked to doctors and other experts. There was no absolute proof that vaccines are either safe or effective. We resolved that if we had a child we would never subject her or him to any kind of vaccination,” Reba Paul, the editor of Health Café, told this newspaper.

Three months after the pledge was taken, Reba became pregnant. The child, who has been kept away from vaccines as if they were the plague, is now three-and-a-half years old.

“Except for the mild fever associated with the sprouting of a new tooth, Eva has been absolutely free of childhood infections,” Reba said.

According to her, controlled group studies carried out in the West have shown that non-vaccinated children are healthier than vaccinated ones. A child’s ability to fight infection, Reba says, is connected more with a good diet and sanitary surroundings than vaccines in the blood stream.

“For the first six months I gave my child only breast milk and nothing else. After that I added fruits and coconut milk. A child's digestive system is not powerful enough to digest cereals,” Reba says.

What scared Reba the most about vaccines was the presence of metals like mercury and aluminum in them. “How can I subject my child to vaccinations when I won’t even dare to give her toys coated with these metals?” she asks. She is also alarmed by the frequency of the vaccinations.

“These injections are administered when the child's internal systems are at a tender stage of development. I simply could not allow stuff like mercury and aluminum to be deposited in my baby's nervous system,'' she says.

The main reasons for paediatric problems, according to Reba, are bad food choices and unwanted vaccinations.

I think she is sending wrong information to the people.
I am the mother of a kid with autism..My son had mild to moderate autism. I noticed it before his MMR shot. i believe vaccines help your body to fight against certain diseases. Prevention is better than cure and vaccines should be given in time. Suppose a child gets polio, will a mother be able to cure it? Never in her lifetime and she will feel guilt for her entire life. Once the muscle is paralyzed no medicine can cure it. By God's grace her daughter is in good health. It's not too late for her to realise and get the remaining vaccines.

First the mom needs help. Second if this was western country then mom might have to face legal challenges -being sued by her daughter if god forbid she develops any infection when she grows up.

Please refer to published medical journals before making such huge decisions especially when children are involved. I am sure if there were a perfect world, no one would need vaccinations. It is very difficult to control the environment unless this child has no other human contact.

Even the link of autism to vaccinations is not correct and only based on individual experiences. The only published article linking autism to vaccinations was retracted recently because of the way it was conducted. There is no published, scientifically conducted research as proof to such claims.

"There was no absolute proof that vaccines are either safe or effective." How can she doubt the effectiveness of vaccines? The anti-vaccine movement began due to religious beliefs... God sends diseases to those who sin. Its' been proven over and over that the anti-vaccine literature is not based on science e.g. MMR vaccine fiasco. A few mothers refused to give MMR vaccine to their kids in the USA and now there is a resurgence of measles there. Diseases like polio are showing a resurgence due to insufficient vaccination in south asia and china. This lady should realize that she is endangering her child due to her faith in literature that is baseless. Apparently she thinks that because her child has been relatively infection free, she is right. There is absolutely no logic in that. I mean I might cross the road blindfolded and survive, but I wouldnt recommend it as the best way of getting across.

I assume you are the editor of Health Cafe, which I guess is some health magazine. You are in such a position, where you should enlighten the people what is essential in developing a healthy community. You were given the vaccinations when you were a kid and that has helped in improving your immunity system.
I feel you are denying the health rights of your kid. Also, this might influence other parents who don't really know what vaccinations really are, to presume that it's okay to not give any vaccinations. So, kindly stop creating a negative impact on society.

Vaccinations have saved the lives of tens of millions of children, and helped eliminate or control many deadly diseases. These mothers who assume they some how now more than the experts (doctors & medical researchers) are simply putting themselves at risk.
No one said a vaccine would make your child healthy. However, it does bring immunity to a disease. In other words Eva, the daughter, is at unnecessary risk for multiple diseases that could be prevented.

What about polio vaccine, which had good results over significant period? The entire world accepts it. I would say that Reba put her child at risk and it worked out for her. But it certainly doesn't apply to all. Having said that, I accept that there are quite a few vaccinations (just to generate money for medical associations) which are not needed because either they don't do what they are supposed to or claim to do or they have negative effects. So, you need to know which are necessary which are not. But I wouldn't certainly be a Reba.

I had an uncle who believed in alternative medicine and avoided vaccination. His daughter had polio and is leading a miserable life.
