A 48-year-old man died at the Ramachandrapuram police station in Medak district in the early hours of Tuesday. However, police claimed that the deceased Kattakoyala Brahmam, a native of Nizamabad district, committed suicide by hanging himself in the lock-up. Police shifted the body to Sangareddy Government Hospital for post-mortem.
“He was not tortured, but he committed suicide. He hanged himself to the grill on the top using his towel. An inquiry into the incident is going on. We will take action if there is any lapse on the part of police based on post-mortem report,’’ said Medak superintendent of police, Mr P.J. Victor. Brahmam hails from Durigi village in Birpur mandal of Nizamabad district. He was released from jail on December 20 and was staying in Beeramguda of RC Puram. He was an accused in many cases, including murder of a woman in 2003, two theft cases each in Nizamabad and in Ramchandrapuram. It’s learnt that Ramachandrapuram police took him into custody four days ago in connection with a theft. He was found dead in the lock up at around 4 am.
Police registered a case under Section 176 of IPC (Omission to give notice or information to public servant by person legally bound to give it).
