Cops water down fight against quacks

The fight against quacks has been watered down by the deputy inspector general of police, superintendents of police and the district medical and health officers who are turning deaf ear to the complaints filed by the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council. No action was taken against 23 "doctors" whom the medical council has filed complaints. These "doctors" were found practicing allopathic medicine either with fake degrees, or without any qualification.

In a recent case, a complaint was lodged against one D.V. Revathi, who was allegedly a practicing gynaecologist with fake certificates at Bhaisna in Adilabad district. A complaint was filed with the Adilabad police and the information was passed on to the DIG, Karimnagar, and the SP of Adilabad. However, there is no information on the action taken against her. Similarly, a complaint was lodged against 14 persons practising medicine without qualifications and the complaints were forwarded to the Ranga Reddy DMHO. Three reminders later, there is still no response from the DMHO.

The AP Medical Council vice-chairman Dr K. Ramesh Reddy says, “The AP Medical Council has the right to inquire into the incident and bring out the facts but ultimately, it is the law enforcing authorities who have to take action against these individuals playing with the lives of people.” Under the AP Medical Establishment Regulations Act, the local DMHO has to issue certificates to the allopathic clinics in his district. They have to close down the clinics that have no qualified doctors. No action has been initiated against the clinics run by fake doctors and this is resulting in the mushrooming of such health centres, especially in the rural, semi urban and slum areas in the city.

Other persons against whom complaints have been lodged but no action has been taken include: Kareemunnisa Begum of Saroornagar, Chandra Reddy of Kadthal, K. Lakshmipathy of Machilipatnam, S.K. Rahamutlla and S.K. Nazeer Pasha of Kaligiri in Nellore.
