This year only three eminent personalities from the state were conferred with the prestigious Padma awards on Republic Day eve. NRI judge from Germany P.C. Rao was awarded the Padma Bhushan and veteran social worker Dr G. Muniratnam Naidu and badminton coach S.M. Arif were awarded Padma Shris. This is the first time in recent years that only three people from Andhra Pradesh were chosen for the Padma awards. Officials blamed the state’s lack of political clout at the Centre.
