In one of the worst disasters, around 150 Olive Ridley turtles got trapped in a single net and found dead on Kothapeta beach under Vajrapukotturu mandal in Srikakulam district on Friday.

The village sarpanch, Mr Ambati Raju, said he never saw so many dead turtles in his life and blamed the fishermen from Visakhapatnam for not taking preventive measures.

He defended that the local fishermen never used such nets in which the turtles get trapped and dead.

The founder chairman of Visakha society for prevention and care of animals, Mr Pradeep Nath, said the disaster took place as the mechanised boats and trawlers did not using turtle excluding devices.

Do you know how long it got these turtles to reach that size? All of them are breeding size. It takes a long time for these creatures to be replaced by nature and just hours for humanity to destroy them! It's just awful! Not to mention the suffering they endured and the sensless loss of their lives.

This is an absolute disgrace — tragic to see such a loss, something that could have been avoided I am sure. I hope that some kind of justice will be served for these animals and the fishermen will be better monitored from here on!

This is beyond belief! What is wrong with "humans"?

This is a disgraceful thing to happen but India is such a corrupt country no one will be charged for this disgusting act.

I am still fighting for these and all other species here in the Gulf due to the BP oil spill. Looking at this photo makes me wonder why should I carry on with guys like this on the loose.

They know perfectly well there are nets available that help prevent the entrapment of turtles! How about they just pay a huge fine for not using these special nets! Are they too cheap to buy them? Or in too much a hurry to get their product? Look at the lives wasted! How dare they!!!

Are the fishermen going to be charged? These turtles are supposed to be protected, are they not.

Govt should take action on this. It is very hard to digest.

This is tragic and completely preventable. Turtle excluder devices are very effective at not only preventling turtles entering a trawl net, but also other large species such as sharks and rays. In Australia they have been compulsory for over 10 years and the catch of turtles has dropped to almost zero.

This makes me sick in my stomach!
