The son of an advocate in the Madras High Court was on Sunday arrested for looting 55 sovereigns of jewellery and Rs 20 lakh from his own house at Ennore on Friday.

A special team arrested Rathina Selvam, 22, and his aide Jayapaul, 23, alias Mohan on Sunday.
Rathina Selvam is the younger son of advocate Malathy and her husband Ganesan, who was employed with the registration department from Ennore.

Selvam had demanded money from his parents for starting a business but they had refused. He then hatched a plan to loot valuables from his house in connivance with his friend when his family members leave to attend a family wedding.

To avoid suspicion, Selvam accompanied his parents to Guduvancherry but kept in touch with his friend over phone and helped him loot the valuables. When they came home at noon, they found the wooden almirah broken and 55 sovereigns of jewellery and Rs 20 lakh in cash stolen.

“He kept instructing his friend Jayapaul about the valuables over phone. He was sending him SMSes and helped him trace the key of the almirah,” said joint commissioner (north) Senthamarai Kannan.

“We got a breakthrough after learning from the complainants that their youngest son had asked for money. Subsequently, the car driver informed us that Rathina Selvam appeared restless and was seen talking over phone to a stranger.

But he also joined his father in searching the accused,” he said.Selvam confessed that he and his friend had looted the money from his house and purchased a car for `5 lakh and kept the remaining money in Tondiarpet.
