In-laws detained wife: BPO staffer

A call centre employee, who married his colleague five months ago, has told city police that his wife, Reshma, who is three-months pregnant, has been ‘illegally detained’ by her parents.

Ramesh Kumar, 31, said that his in-laws had threatened to forcefully terminate Reshma’s pregnancy.

The two of them were employed at a call centre in Parry’s for the past five years and had got married just five months ago on August 19, Kumar said.

The couple were from different faiths and married despite opposition their families, he said.
Reshma’ parents, who are from Kodungaiyur, approached Kumar on December 28 pretending to have made peace.

They told him that they would like to hold a reception for their friends and relatives.

“As Reshma was three months pregnant, they expressed their wish to spend two days with their daughter,” said Kumar.

“Subsequently, they took her with them promising to send her back after two days,” he said.

“However, on December 30, they called me up saying that they would reunite their daughter with me only if I promise to convert to their religion,” he said.

“As I refused to do so, they are now threatening to terminate her pregnancy,” he said.

Kumar alleged that they had threated to even arrange a remarriage for her and sought the help of the police in rescuing his wife.
