Engine hits train, derails coaches

A diesel engine rammed into a stationary train leaving two coaches derailed at Villupuram junction in the wee hours of Monday.

Around 1.10 am, the diesel engine heading for fuelling hit the rakes of stationary Villupuram-Mayiladuthurai passenger (train no 56873) from behind.

Fortunately, no one was injured, as it was an empty train. The impact was so heavy that substantial damage was caused to the luggage cum brake van of the passenger train and two of its coaches derailed.

However, traffic movement was not affected on the stretch. Preliminary enquiries revealed that the engine had moved in the southern side instead of north.

Authorities in Tiruchy railway division said that an inter-departmental enquiry has been ordered and disciplinary action would be initiated against the loco driver soon.
