A couple who were married just three years ago committed suicide following disagreement over a trivial issue at Selaiyur in suburban Tambaram on Friday.
Manimaran, 28, who was married to Vijaya, 24, a native of Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district, was working in a private printing press in Royapuram.
On Friday morning, the two quarrelled after Manimaran chided his wife over the delay in cooking food. He also left for office in a huff without taking the lunch pack, said police.
On reaching office, he tried calling up his wife. As she failed to take his calls, he informed his colleagues and left for home early.
When he reached home, he found his wife hanging from the ceiling of the fan and his two-year-old son Rishikesh crying.
Shocked over this, he contacted Vijaya’s parents in Kumbakonam and informed about them about the suicide.
“Vijaya’s parents accused Manimaran of killing their daughter and said they would come to Chennai and file a complaint with the police. Manimaran also committed suicide by hanging with the help of a saree from a hook fixed on the ceiling next to his wife,” said an investigating officer.
As the child was crying non-stop, neighbours grew suspicious and peeped through the windows only to find the two hanging.
By then Vijaya’s parents arrived and alerted the police who later broke open the door and took the bodies to Government Chrompet Hospital for post mortem.
Selaiyur police have registered a case and are investigating.
