To improve relationships with fishermen and also to commemorate the 35th Raising Day of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), the paramilitary force has decided to conduct its first ever boat race in Chennai on February 7 and 8.
“It will be the first time that ICG will be conducting a boat race for fishermen in and around Chennai off the Marina Beach,” Inspector General Satya Prakash Sharma, Regional Commander, ICG Region (East) told reporters on board the ICG ship Sarang on Sunday.
He said the competition would be held in three different categories namely catamarans, fibre boats and mechanised boats.
The elimination rounds would be held on February 7 and the final races would be conducted on February 8.
“As part of ICG Day celebration, we are conducting various events to remain connected to people. We have commenced a bike rally on Sunday from Kanyakumari with Coast Guard personnel riding through coastal fishing villages. It will culminate in Chennai on February 1,” he added.
