Voters will no longer have to wait for summary revision around election time to procure one’s photo identity card or update their details in the voters’ list. Now on, voter enrolment, revision and updation will be a continuous process and not restricted to January alone, as has been the norm so far, said C.R. Chikmath, State Election Commissioner, during the National Voters’ Day celebrations held in the city on Wednesday.
Based on the 2011 Census, the State Election Commission hopes to include all adults in the voter list before the urban local body elections in January 2013. “We have an online registration system and enrolment drives at school and college levels to improve enrollment and updation. However, it is equally important that voters delete their names from the list when they move their residence out of their constituency or ward.”
“Four lakh new voters (18-19 years age group) were enrolled during a drive in schools and colleges. SEC’s other initiatives include appointment of Matadara Mitras to guide voters, launching software to issue electronic photo identity cards and voter awareness through docudramas,” explained C.S. Suranjana, chief electoral officer, Karnataka. Governor H.R. Bharadwaj expressed concern over dangerous trends emerging out of elections held recently. “Corrupt practices and elections being fought on caste lines and religion are threatening the idea of united India),” he said.
