The the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad were bathed in saffron as three-day convention of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), got underway on Friday. Flagged off by RSS general secretary Suresh Bhaiyyaji Joshi and Gurusidda Rajayogindra swamiji of Murusavir Mutt, the convention saw Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, ministers and BJP legislators, in attendance in full RSS gear. Former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, other senior BJP leaders and over 150 pontiffs are expected to take part in the camp.
Calling himself a simple RSS worker, Mr Gowda attributed his success in politics to the contributions made by the outfit. “RSS inspires the spirit of patriotism among people and so will focus on instilling confidence among the youth during this convention”, he said. Refusing to dwell on the recent poltiical developments in the state, the Chief Minister merely said he would present the next Budget after discussions with the people and officials concerned. Around 25,000 swayamsevaks have arrived from 13 districts of North Karnataka for the convention, which saw Hubli-Dharwad decked in banners and buntings. A temporary township has been built on 140 acres of land near Tarihal on the outskirts.
An exhibition, “Yugadrushti”, focusing on the country's progress, its cultural heritage, and the growth of the RSS has been organised as part of the event . A puppet show recalling the legacy of the Vijayanagar empire promises to be one of the highlights of the convention.Also on display are180 classical, folk and foreign musical instruments collected by Dr Gangubai Hangal Music Foundation . RSS swayamsevaks brought 2.5 lakh jowar rotis and 1.25 lakh holiges, ( a traditional sweet ) to the convention organised for the first time in North Karntaka. While the event will mainly focus on RSS goals, the recent infighting among state BJP leaders could also figure during the discussions, according to sources.
