No plans for Rs 1,000 notes: Shaktikanta Das

Mr Das, in a series of tweets, went on to highlight the logistics problem of reloading ATMs frequently.

New Delhi: Economic affairs secretary Shaktikanta Das said on Wednesday that the government is focusing to remove the cash crunch at ATMs and requested people to draw only that much cash they actually require.

He also denied plans to introduce Rs 1,000 notes any time soon. “Complaints of cash out in ATMs being addressed. Request everyone to draw the cash they actually require. Overdrawal by some deprives others,” said Mr Das in a series of tweets. He said that enough cash is available.

“Logistics issues of reloading ATMs more frequently being addressed," said the secretary. This newspaper on Tuesday had published a report that most of the ATMs across the country are still running dry after over 100 days of demonetisation even as RBI this week enhanced weekly withdrawal limit from saving bank accounts to Rs 50,000 per week.

He also denied that the centre will introduce Rs 1,000 notes and said that focus currently is on supply of Rs 500 and lower denomination notes.
