Inflation falls, Centre hopes for RBI rate cut

Overall consumer food inflation in August fell to 5.91 per cent as against 8.35 per cent in July.

New Delhi: Retail inflation based on Consumer price index (CPI) fell to a five-month low of 5.05 per cent in August due to slower rate of price increase in vegetables as well as food and beverages.

Lower inflation could give a legroom for the Reserve Bank of India to cut its interest rates. The finance ministry expressed hope that RBI will take into account improvement in the price situation while deciding on rate cut in its next policy review due in October.

Overall consumer food inflation in August fell to 5.91 per cent as against 8.35 per cent in July. Vegetables inflation in August came at 1.02 per cent against 14.06 per cent in July. However, pulses inflation came at 22.01 per cent against 27.53 per cent in July.
