PIL challenges demonetisation, Centre files caveat in SC

Centre wants SC to hear its stand before it passes any order on the plea.

Mumbai: A Public Interest Litigation was today filed in the Supreme Court challenging the government’s sudden withdrawal of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes form the Indian economic system.

The move has abrogated these currencies’ legal tender status that means they end up only as piece of paper.

The PIL claims the decision has caused inconvenience to the common man. The apex court is likely to hear the matter on November 15.

The government in order to avoid any kind of embarrassment has rushed to the apex court with a caveat and wants it is heard before any order is passed on the PIL challenging the demonetisation.

On November 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a televised address to the nation announced his government was withdrawing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes with an aim to curb black money and remove fake currency notes from the system.
