GE, Tata ink deal to build passenger plane engines

The factory in the city for making the CFM International LEAP engine components will augment the Make India initiative.

Hyderabad: General Electric and Tata group have entered into partnership to manufacture engines for passenger jets in Hyderabad.

The factory in the city for making the CFM International LEAP engine components will augment the Make India initiative.

The two firms on Thursday announced the deal and revealed their intentions to pursue military engine and aircraft system opportunities.

Minister of IT, K.T. Rama Rao took to Twitter, to express happiness over signing the agreement. He thanked Ratan Tata, GE chairman and CEO John Flannery and Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran.

Mr Flannery who is looking forward to work with Tata group said, “Our collaboration in building innovative technologies will support the ‘Make in India’ vision of the Indian government”.

While GE currently provides the jet engines and marine gas turbines for many Indian military applications, Tata group is a leader in the Indian defence and aerospace sector.

“We look forward to working with GE to build more expertise and strengthen India’s defence manufacturing capabilities,” said Mr Chandrasekaran.

GE Aviation and Tata Sons’ subsidiary, Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL), will collaborate to manufacture, assemble, integrate and test aircraft components.

The LEAP engine is the world’s leading jet engine known for its technological superiority, efficient fuel consumption, performance for powering single-aisle commercial jets.
