Ford Recalls 42,300 Units of Figo and Figo Aspire over Airbag Issue

Ford will correct a software issue with the Restraint Control Module (RCM) of these cars.

Ford India has issued a recall of 42,300 units of its latest hatchback, the Figo, and its sedan sibling, the Figo Aspire. The directive concerns vehicles manufactured since its launch, until 12 April 2016.

Ford will correct a software issue with the Restraint Control Module (RCM) of these cars. The module is part of the car's ECU that controls the deployment of the airbags. The company claims that affected vehicles may contain a software error, which could result in the airbags not deploying when required. Ford service centres shall carry out a software upgrade to fix the glitch, free of charge.

Earlier, the automaker had halted deliveries and test drives to rectify the issue. However, deliveries have now been resumed. “A corrective action on all Figo and Figo Aspire vehicles, presently at Ford dealerships, has been undertaken, leading to a resumption of deliveries to customers,” Ford India said in a statement.

The Figo and the Aspire are the only cars in their respective segments to feature six airbags. We appreciated Ford's concern for safety when we put the siblings to the test (you can read the road test reports here and here). Other than the airbags, the twins get safety features such as Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Traction Control and Hill Start Assist in different trims.

Ford's approach in acknowledging and rectifying the issue is commendable. We urge owners of the Figo and Figo Aspire to get the software update done as soon as possible.
