Nov. 26: High-rise apartments might come with the promise of all the trappings of luxury such as landscaped gardens and swimming pools, but the dream home lies far ahead due to scarcity of water in the city. In a bid to educate apartment dwellers on how to wisely use water, an IT firm has decided to hold water workshops in various apartments in Bengaluru.
Apartmentadda, a firm which deals with apartment management software, has teamed up with Rain Water Club to conduct workshops on sustainable water management for those living in apartments. “We will begin this series with SJR Redwoods apartments in Sarjapur Road and then we will continue this with other apartment complexes as many have shown a keen interest in knowing more to help them tackle their water woes,” said Ashika S., chief marketing officer, Apartmentadda.
On an average, apartment complexes with more than 150 units spend around Rs 40,000 per month in buying water from tankers. “Nowadays, the apartments are getting swankier with luxuries which require water. However, Cauvery water pipes have not reached these new layouts yet. One has to manage with borewell water or tankers,” said Shubha, water sustainability specialist, Rain Water Club.
Presently, around 1000 litres of water costs Rs 50, however in a crisis, water tankers quote inflated rates as they know the apartment dwellers do not have other options.
“We are now concentrating on apartments because they are the ones who need it most,” said Shubha. Since apartments generally do not have individual meters, there is no way of measuring the consumption of each family. “If each household were to pay according to their usage, then families would get a little more judicious about how they use water,” she added.
The advantages of rainwater harvesting will also be taught in the workshops lined up in prominent apartment complexes.
