Another journalist shot in Tripura, Second scribe killed in two months

The incident occurred two months after another journalist, Shantanu Bhowmik was killed by a mob allegedly in the presence of the police.

Guwahati: In yet another assault against journalists, a crime reporter of a local newspaper Sudip Datta Bhaumik was shot dead by a personal security officer of the commandant of the 2nd Tripura State Rifles at RK Nagar, about 20 km from Agartala.

Police which is tight-lipped about the incident said that they have arrested Nandagopal Reang, the PSO of the commandant and investigating the circumstances in which incident took place.

The incident occurred two months after another journalist, Shantanu Bhowmik was killed by a mob allegedly in the presence of the police at Mandai, about 40 km from Agartala.

“Though, official version of the police is yet to come. We have the information that Sudip Datta Bhaumik had gone to meet the commandant of the Tripura State Rifles on his invitation and in a mysterious circumstances he was shot dead by a PSO,” said Mr Sanjib Deb a senior journalist at Agartala to this newspaper.

“We came to know that Sudip had some altercation with commandant and his PSO opened fire,” he added.

“While a forensic team had visited the spot, post-mortem of the deceased has been conducted in camera,” the superintendent of police  of the West district said. 

The police official said that other details including what had actually transpired leading to the constable firing upon Bhaumik was still under investigation.
