Renault-Nissan rolls out millionth car

The car which is a red Nissan Micra was launched after five years of the Nissan-Renault alliance.

Chennai: The Renault-Nissan Alliance manufacturing plant rolled out its millionth car at its Oragadam unit on Friday. The car which is a red Nissan Micra was launched after five years of the Nissan-Renault alliance.

Flagged off in March 2010 following a Rs 4,500 crore initial investment, the alliance has since invested a further Rs 1,600 crore to increase the plant’s capability. Chairman of Nissan’s Africa, Middle East and India region, and former Alliance Executive vice-president Christian Mardrus attributed the success to the workforce in Chennai.

The plant’s managing director of Renault Nissan Alliance India Private Ltd (RNAIPL), Colin MacDonald, said that the company has launched two new models each year across three brands since 2010.

It can be noted that the most recent model introduced was the popular Renault Kwid in September last year. This will be followed in 2016 by the third Datsun-branded vehicle to be sold in India.

2nd largest exporter: The plant has grown into India’s second largest car exporter with more than 600,000 units shipped to 106 countries since 2010. Annual production volume has risen from an initial 75,000 units in the 2010 financial year, to over 2,00,000 by the end of CY 2015 in March.
