Shashidhar moves Hyderabad HC for more GHMC election time

Telangana govt and GHMC have failed in complying with schedule fixed earlier by Court.

Hyderabad: Congress leader Marri Shashidhar Reddy on Tuesday moved the Hyderabad High Court seeking extension of time granted to conduct elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.

He alleged that the Telangana State Election Commission, state government and GHMC have failed in complying with the time schedule fixed earlier by the Court for conducting the GHMC election, and sought extension of time.

Recalling an interim order granted by the court on a petition by Forum for Good Governance, Mr Reddy said that in its interim order, the court observed that the SEC statutorily requires at least 45 days for conducting the elections, after the government and GHMC completes the groundwork / pre-election process, and that a consequential affidavit was filed by the GHMC for extension of the time granted, by another 45 days.

He contended that the inaction on the part of the authorities in complying with the undertaking and the resultant interim direction was in clear violation of the statutory requirements.
